Hair Loss After Pregnancy

Hair loss after pregnancy is extremely common in women. Hair loss during and after pregnancy can be due to hormonal problems. Many women notice hair loss about 3 months after they’ve had a baby. This loss is also related to hormones. Pregnancy can change the overall configuration of the hormones of a woman in many ways. When hormones change, the hair may become a target for change in some, but not necessarily all, women.

This is due to the rapid growth of the hair cells which reflect changes in the global environment hormone in the body of the woman. When a woman is pregnant, increasing production of sex hormone estrogen, which in turn prolongs the growing (anagen) phase of hair cycle.

Given the rate of hair growth, approximately ½ inch per month, it may take up to one year before returning hair to its state prior to pregnancy.
